This is the second release on Nonnative, a subsidiary of the formidable Semantica. Semantica is a label renowned for being understated, introspective and profoundly forward thinking – this release is no exception. With artists as innovative and groundbreaking as Morphology, Mike Parker, Boris Divider, Inigo Kennedy and of course label don Svreca, Semantica has carved itself a solid and respectable niche in the world of Techno.
Nonnative02 is metallic, gritty, space music – fabricated from dark matter and photons with a smattering of Tachyons which have been moulded together to form sonic slices of data to transport you beyond this realm.
The first track is entitled ‘Floating Matter’ by Iori, the title is apt as the 808 kick anchors what appear to be shards of twisted sonic matter that float in and out of the soundscape until all elements combine with a jittery, filtered clap sound and build to fever pitch. This music was not made for Ibiza…
Next up we have ‘Runout’ by Alexey Volkov a disjointed number with a sopping wet lead sound and punchy kick with a rumbling crunchy bass laden with effects, all of which culminate in a dark brooding sound for those moments on the dancefloor where you kind of forget who and where you are and you sole purpose is to meld with the sound reverberating around you.
‘Identity’ by Tom Diciccio is something rather sinister and my preferred cut on this release. Deep, broodingly heavy lead sound twisted up with all sorts of filters and effects take you on a journey deep inside the universe of the self. Catchy and scary at the same time…. This will stay with you long after the night’s journey is over.
‘Vertice’ by Sharin is a little more melodic than the rest of the EP but none the less deep for it. Swooshing background synths wash in and out behind the main hook giving this a slightly lighter, breezier feel than the rest of this release, more thoughtful than sinister this one but still with that spacey, intergalactic vibe present throughout.
All in all, a well rounded release – these tracks ‘fit’ with each other, nothing is out of place here. This is Techno, understated, deep and aimed at more discerning dancefloors/listeners. Great stuff.
