Various Artists – Rhythmic Science Volume One

rhythmic

Having been sent this release by a good friend I was somewhat intrigued as to what I would find. The quality of the release was never in question but the collection of artists intrigued me. What I can say is that all four tracks are of excellent quality, each with its own take on electronic funk.

First up is a Mark Archer cut, who as always, delivers. There is a decidedly warm feel to ‘Chuch’ complete with bleeps. Its basically the evolution of his sound, not really fitting into any genre, just does its thing, proper dance floor music for the more discerning listener. Next up is Derek Carr with ‘Centrepoint’. Starting of with plenty of soul and just delivering a thoughtful track full of space and a solid beat keeping it all together and driving us forwards. Blackjack is next with ‘Future classic’ and a slightly different sound here, more electro but still with plenty of depth. This is different and a fresh sound, not to say that the first two cuts aren’t equally as good just there’s something else happening here. This is more head music yet could equally kick things off at the right club. After a nice long intro the beat just hits you and sits neatly with the rest of the dextrous production. Finally we have Mark Ambrose and ‘Insane’ which is an altogether different track again with its crunching beats and nagging, well insane looping riff complete with a vocal sample that just drops at the right time, oh and cow bells too. Later into the track some suitably quality synth work drops that just completes the track perfectly.

What we have are four excellent showcases of the new label Rhythmic Science where each artist provides their own interpretation on the Detroit sound. The label is the best kind as its name perfectly captures its sound. This is high quality underground electronic Funk and it goes without saying that if you have been enjoying this sort of music for a long time you will enjoy the nods and evolutions of sound provided here. Alternatively if have an appreciation of perfectly crafted electronic music then this showcase and label should be a welcome addition to your collection. Enjoy.

Mark Archer – (altern8, nexus 21, bizarre inc, etc).
Mark Ambrose – (established artist and dj’s around the world on a weekly basis).
Derek Carr – (has released for over 10yrs and eanred a rep for chilled spacey detroit techno).
Black Jack – Upcoming scottish producer with releases on detroit based labels like soiree and travels to detroit to DJ at DEMF events most years.

Denis Clifford – Miracles of Matter

Reviewed by:Neil Sherwood

clifford

Irish producer Denis Clifford is a relatively newcomer to the Deep House scene with only one release under his belt so far (the EP ‘Easter Island’). Here Clifford gives us his first album ‘Miracles of Matter’ for Jenifa Mayanja’s ‘Bumako Recordings’ label and quite the accomplished début it is.

The album maintains a Deep House feel throughout, though this is far from one dimensional. There are many different elements bubbling within the tracks. This helps to make this a fully rounded album rather than just a collection of House tracks aimed at the DJ.

There is an organic musicality to many of these tunes. Live drum sounds feature heavily on a number of the tracks. Piano and double bass add to the Jazz feel on ‘Blue Moves’. While a steel drum melody gives it a tropical vibe. ‘Go Water’ plays on an acoustic guitar line that is somewhat hypnotising.

‘Clockwork’, possibly the albums strongest cut, is built around mesmerising African tribal chants and percussion with some sweet keys lifting the mood. I can imagine this one creating a great atmosphere on many a dancefloor.

Elsewhere on the album Clifford opts for a more electronic approach. ‘Run’ and ‘The King of Dreams’ are prime example of this style. ‘Run’ has a real energy to it combining mournful strings and a driving Techno bassline. While ‘The King of Dreams’ ups the pace further whilst keeping a melodic Techno warmth to it.

Overall ‘Miracles of Matter’ is an impressive début album from Clifford. He delivers a collection that works well of the headphones as well as cuts that will work in the club. We look forward to hearing what he has in store for us in the future.

LP Of The Month: Orlando Voorn – Divine Intervention

Reviewed by: The Bearded Wonder
voorn

Regular readers and viewers of Timeline Music require no introduction to the prolific Mr Voorn, so I won’t even go there. Let’s get into the music.

Divine Intervention as an LP encompasses many of Voorn’s musical influences, with many tracks oozing that solid P-Funk vibe, Jazz and Soul emanate throughout in abundance and of course there’s that whole Techno and Electronic thing going on. The groove that runs throughout is irresistible and delicious. One thing that is obvious on this LP is that Voorn really is not trying to appeal to ANYbody other than himself and that is exactly what makes this special.
voorn

Artists who continually try to appeal to a particular market or ‘scene’ are inevitably restricting themselves in so many ways. Orlando has gone in with a ‘f*ck it’ attitude and catered purely for himself and that is why, although a ‘cohesive’ whole, this LP contains so many disparate elements that have obviously been of profound influence to the man throughout his career. It is almost a lesson in how he has arrived at his ‘sound’.

I refuse to follow the usual ‘track by track’ breakdown here, previews are available below (though they do NOT do this LP justice) all I can say that we are very happy to award this ‘LP Of The Month’ status and in my opinion quite possibly of the year. I urge you to support continued development in underground music by supporting the artist and actually buying this. Future generations will thank you.

Mayo Soulomon – Night Shades EP (Fly By Night)

Reviewed by: Neil Sherwood

mayo
The ‘Fly By Night’ label are only 4 releases deep, but are already gaining a reputation amongst Deep House heads as ones to watch. With quality releases from Deep Space Orchestra and Andy Ash already under their belt, they turn to Italian producer Mayo Soulomon for this EP.

‘Feel Part 1’ starts things off in a modern Disco style. An analogue bass line grabs the attention as the track builds with some sweet swirling melodies. An infectious vocal line informs us to ‘Feel The Rhythm’ which is quite frankly difficult to resist.

‘Feel Part 2’ takes is things into classic New York Garage territory, albeit with a modern kick. Sampled divas, finger snapping beats and stabbing keys are the order of the day here. Think classic Kerri Chandler or those early MAW dubs.

Rick Wade takes care of business on his remix of ‘Feel Part 1’. Wade serves up his trademark lush Deep House sound. Heavy drums mix with sweet jazzy keys and that infectious vocal loop.

Soulomon closes the EP with perhaps the most interesting track in this collection. ‘808 shades’ has that vintage House feel to it. However, the track also manages to bring enough modern elements so as to make it more than just a retro piece. Rubbery bass lines and 808 claps bounce off of each other with increasing intensity. While subtle smooth chords build throughout the ride. This is definitely my pick of the EP and a great way to finish.

This release is forthcoming and links to previews and purchase will be added when we receive them.

Neil Sherwood’s ‘In Transit’ Recommended for May/June

Skymark feat. Lady Blacktronika – NSYDE EP (NSYDE)

skymark

Barcelona’s Skymark makes his debut on the NSYDE label with this magical release. First track ‘Use Me’ matches the soulful vocals of Lady Blacktronica over a lazy beat all held together with some serious synth lines. ‘Honeymoon Ballad’ continues the space funk theme with swirling melody lines and squelchy stabs. ‘Destructive Poison Everywhere’ closes the set, moving slightly closer to a more traditional Disco-House sound. A mesmerising EP from Skymark, will be keeping my eyes peeled for more from him.

Moomin – A Day & A Night (Closer)

moomin

Moomin, aka Sebastian Genz has released music in the past for labels such as Smallville and Aim. This EP, his first release for his own Closer label, is possibly his most stunning yet. All the production characteristics we’ve come to expect are here. Simple loops that build gently, blissful jazzy piano snatches, and of course some heavy Deep House drums. When all put together it yields something much bigger than the sum of its parts. All three tracks are strong making it hard to pick a favourite. I find the best option is to play all three.

Legowelt – Elementz of Houz Music (Actress mixes) (Clone Jack For Daze)

jack

Actress takes on Legowelt’s ‘Elementz of Houz Music’ from his recent ‘Paranormal Soul’ album for this remix EP. The first version chops up the elements of Legowelt’s original into a hazy relentless groove aimed firmly at the dancefloor. Version two however is heading more towards the bathroom floor. Here the tempo drops into drunken territory, in fact it sounds like a 45 being played at 33. Disorientating yet intriguing, Actress does it again!

Ralf Gum feat. Kenny Bobien – The Only Way (Raw Artistic Soul Spiritual Touch)

gog

Now there are a total of twelve different remixes on this release which seems a little bit excessive. However I’m only going to talk about 1, the ‘Raw Artistic Soul Spiritual Touch’. This is the only version you need in my opinion, ignore the rest. This remix strips everything right back to the basics. What’s left behind are some raw heavy drums complimented by Kenny’s beautiful spiritual vocal. The contrast leaves me with goosebumps on every listen, this is true, soulful House.

Azymuth – Ashley Beedle & Opolopo remixes (Far Out Recordings)

Reviewd by: Neil Sherwood

azymuth

Far Out Recordings have been releasing music by Brazilian trio Azymuth for many years. This has ranged from new recordings to reissues of their 70s and 80s material. The originals of these tracks are taken from their 2011 album ‘Aurora’. Far Out are planning a 2 CD remix album of the whole ‘Aurora’ album soon. This EP is the first taster of that project.

First up are Ashley Beedle’s ‘Africanz On Marz’ remixes of ‘E Mulher’. Beedle crafts a stunning space disco take on the original track. Using many elements from the original, including the chorus chant and some light and breezy keys, giving them a whole new modern setting. Reminiscent of Beedle’s ‘Black Science Orchestra’ days, this is perfect for the summer festival season. There’s also a dub on offer which loses the sunshine theme a touch in favour of a slightly darker feel.

The EP is backed up with Opolopo’s versions of ‘Caranaval Legrand’. On the main mix, the Swedish producer keeps the Brazilian melodies in the forefront, mixing them with that fat 80s boogie feel he does so well. The dub toughens things up a touch, losing some of the samba touches in favour of a more late night feel.

All these remixes are sure to find favour on many a dancefloor in the coming sunshine months. We can only wait to see what Far Out have in store when the full remix album is unleashed.

‘Leah With Sound’ Recommends:

Stefan Vincent – Conflate EP

stefan

I am a sucker for carefully crafted arpeggios. Endless repetition that never repeats hooked me from an early age on my pianola and to this day remains a staple in my piano improvisations and compositions. It’s no wonder my ears are on Dutch Techno producer Stefan Vincent and his latest release on the ever-rising Balans label. Vincent’s exploration of cyclical time signatures on his four-tracker Conflate EP, makes an impressive mark. He gives us two surges of undulating arpeggio patterns with Conflate Four and Conflate Five, reminiscent of that Jeff Mills ground-breaker, Growth (Axis 10), but with a lighter, more mournful feel. The frenetic swirls of peppered melodies coupled with a driving crisp hat and kick, will easily lift up, or drop down, any Techno set, yet could find a place within a more minimal,

Ambient collection. Fool Me Again, the shorter track on the A side, gives us a taste of electronic pointillism whilst Welder on the flip, warms the palate with full, yet slightly distorted sweeping pads. This EP certainly honours Balans’ philosophy of pure, honest Techno and I will be playing it … a lot!

Stanislav Tolkachev – Depth of Lightstanislav

There is nothing grey about the fourth release in this series: Ukranian photographer and Techno producer Stanislav Tolkachev leaves no room for confusion with this cracking release. Grey Series 04 “Depth of Light” serves up five distinct Techno creations, but one in particular Like a Cat’s Shadow, brings the essence of raw Techno straight to the floor with a booming kick and stabs of sharp plucked strings – easily a classic in the making. It is followed on the A side by another crisp stomper, Break Something That Breaks You, and you’d be forgiven for thinking such instructions were given to a frenzied cellist. The EP opens with Depth of Light which gets right into the analogue synth squelches we all know and love, whilst the B side tracks No Home No Flag and Don’t Shit On Your Own Doorstep are

as dark and as deep as it gets. I am not

exaggerating when I say this EP makes my skin tingle. Tokachev describes his music as exploring the “darker, surreal fringes of electronic music in its purest, rawest state”. If you check out his website www.randomnide.com, which also features plenty of unreleased material, and stunning photography, you’ll get an idea of the extraordinary depth of talent this man has to offer.

This lady is forging a bold high road in Detroit with this brilliant and unique release. A cascade of frenetic synthesisers over dark rumbling acid lines and rolling drums are subtly enhanced with delicate vibes and harp melodies, that leave you feeling you’ve just sampled a modern Techno symphony. Go Home owns the A side with John Kronk and Astronomical Twilight airing on the flip. It’s magic from cover to cover and definitely worth the ride.

Juan Atkins & Moritz Von Oswald – Borderland LP

Reviewed by: The Bearded Wonder
digital_promo_13_04_25-320x320
Atkins and Oswald between them have defined and redefined genres and genres within genres countless times. They are icons within their field who have never rested on their laurels, always pushing and innovating, inventing whilst creating some of the most beautiful, thought provoking and visionary music around. The fact that these two have come together here is a simple matter of destiny, the gravitational pull around these two heavyweights meant that they would eventually gravitate toward each other and the resulting collision, combination and production has left something rather special in this reviewers trembling hands.

Borderland is an LP that revels in its subtle progressions and inwardly bound grooves that worm their way to the core of the listener. Introspective, understated and warm are three overused adjectives that work well here but this collection of audio journeys needs something new to describe it… Images are invoked here of driving through chaotic cities on grey, rainy days as the transition to night takes place. The glare of orange street lights catching the steady torrents of rain against the steely blue-grey sky, commuters running in silence, the sense of being part of a bigger mechanism that forms the modern urban landscape. This is laid back, pared down Techno infused with the sounds and vibe of everyday life, the ‘Speculative Fiction’ of electronic music if you will.

The classic ‘Atkins Funk’ is firmly contrasted here with Oswald’s Dub ethics and sense of audio storytelling and evolution to create a distinctly new ‘whole’ from two very different parts. They both bring so much to the table with this release and the result is an audio journey through elements of; Dub, House, Techno, Electro and shimmering ambience and the indescribable genre defying result is a unique treat for any lover of serious minded music.

This release is forthcoming and links to preview and purchase will be posted as and when they become available.
